Birnbeck Pier is wonderful in its wildness. It hangs on by a thread at the end of a rocky promontory, with the currents and waves of the Bristol Channel swirling dangerously round it. Beautiful in its neglect, it could be magnificent if restored. Its exposed, solitary fragility contrasts perfectly with the new pier.
